An indicator should answer a question
A good trading indicator is not just visually impressive. It should answer a specific question the trader needs during the decision process.
That question might be trend direction, volatility condition, session range, momentum shift, structure level, or alert timing. If the indicator does not improve a defined decision, it may add clutter.
Traits of useful indicators
Useful indicators are understandable, configurable, and testable. The trader should know what the indicator measures, when it updates, and what would make a signal invalid.
The indicator should also fit the market and timeframe. A tool built for one workflow may not translate cleanly to another.
- Clear purpose and visible logic.
- Reasonable alerts without excessive noise.
- Settings that match the trader's timeframe.
- No repainting surprises unless clearly explained.
- Room for risk rules outside the indicator.
What indicators cannot do
Indicators cannot remove uncertainty. They summarize information, but the trader still needs risk sizing, invalidation, session rules, and a stop plan.
A trader who uses an indicator without risk rules may simply make faster poor decisions.
Build indicators around workflow
The best indicator projects start with a workflow question, not a visual effect. If the tool helps the trader make cleaner decisions and follow risk rules, it has a practical purpose.
