Indicator vs Expert Advisor: What Is the Difference?

Indicators display or alert on market information, while Expert Advisors can automate actions inside MetaTrader.

They serve different jobs

In MetaTrader, an indicator usually analyzes price or account information and displays it on the chart or in a subwindow. It may also send alerts.

An Expert Advisor can run logic that manages trades, opens positions, modifies stops, closes trades, or monitors account rules. The difference matters because traders often ask for one when they actually need the other.

When an indicator makes sense

An indicator is useful when the trader wants decision support without automated execution. It can mark zones, calculate values, show dashboard states, or alert when a condition appears.

This keeps the final trade decision manual while reducing visual or calculation work.

  • Use an indicator for display, alerts, and analysis.
  • Use an EA for trade execution or management.
  • Use both when alerts and automation belong in one workflow.
  • Document which actions must remain manual.

When an EA makes sense

An EA is appropriate when the workflow requires actions: opening trades, managing stops, locking accounts, counting trades, or responding to account events.

Because EAs can affect positions, they need careful testing, logs, and risk controls.

Choose by responsibility

The right tool depends on what the software is responsible for. If it only informs, an indicator may be enough. If it acts, an EA may be required.

If you need a custom EA, TradingView indicator, Pine Script alert tool, trade copier, Telegram workflow, dashboard, or scanner, Swiftfolio Automation can help map and build the tool.
