Trade count is a behavior control
Max trades per day is not meant to make a strategy better by itself. It is meant to prevent a trader from turning a plan into a stream of unplanned entries.
The challenge is setting the rule in a way that fits the strategy. A scalper may need a different number than a trader who waits for one or two session setups.
Start with the strategy's normal sample
Review how many valid trades the strategy usually produces in a clean session. Then choose a limit that blocks obvious overtrading while still allowing the planned workflow to operate.
If a trader chooses a number only because it sounds strict, the rule may create frustration. If the number is too high, it may not change behavior at all.
- Separate planned entries from add-ons or management actions.
- Decide whether the limit applies per symbol or account-wide.
- Set different limits for different sessions only if the plan requires it.
- Review trade history to see whether the limit changes behavior.
